DFI Day 2 2019

'Hanging out' at Ōtaki School

Wow! What a full on day. Today definitely lived up to the 'Intensive' part of the Digital Fluency Intensive.

We started out with WWW - What's working, What's not, and What do you need help with. It was so exciting to hear so many of our attendees connect with the content from Day 1, and hear about the things they had tried out. I know there are several people who asked about using Bookmarks, but I didn't catch up with them during the day. Will try and catch them during the week.

We connected with the Learn aspect of Learn, Create, Share and then it was straight into the deep dive around Google Keep - This is a fabulous app which I haven't really utilised as much as I could. I'm thinking I might transfer the sticky notes I've got on my desktop to Keep notes, and share them with the various accounts I use across the cluster.

The rest of the day was focused on 'Workflow' - things we can use to streamline our digital world. We looked at Gmail, Calendar and Hangouts. There are some great ways we can work smarter rather than harder.

After lunch we connected with a couple of ways of 'Taming our tabs' it was exciting to see people connecting with this and how they could use it in their classrooms.

Our Create aspect of the day involved connecting with the Summer Learning Journey and having a hangout to discuss examples of students learning. It was so nice to see the teachers out under the trees at Ōtaki School working on this task.

The final part of our day was when people shared on their blogs. I love going through and reading the content of these posts. Allowing me an insight into which areas of the day the teachers have really connected to, and feel will have the greatest impact in their professional life, classroom and personal life. It's also an opportunity for us to identify where we may have missed the mark, or identify anyone who would like some specific support with things from the day that we can catch up with during the week.

Overall, it was a fabulous day with some very tired brains at the end of the day. Kylie's blog post has a great illustration which captures how a lot of the participants were feeling at the end of the day!

DFI Day 1 2019

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
Every time I hear the Manaiakalani Origin story I learn something new. Yesterday it was difficult to focus on the presentation whilst trying to problem solve the Wifi issues - I now know to check this prior to accepting a location as a venue! I found it really interesting to know the schools in Manaiakalani, when plotted on a map are in the shape of the hook! Really interesting to see the shift in high achieving Y10 highlighted in the original pilot classes - good to know to hook in some teachers.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
Google Groups - the value of these is awesome! I can see this being useful both professionally and personally - a google group for the family emails!

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
With the teachers being the learners I am working with there are so many wonderful things that are helpful for them. I think having an organised drive makes such a difference to the work flow for many teachers. If you can eliminate the time spent searching for a doc or managing sharing permissions then that makes more time for things that are more meaningful!

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
I love to play with Google Docs as a creative space, this is often an under utilised aspect of this tool and the remove.bg site is fabulous for making images look professional... it could also be really fun to play with. I can imagine using it create pictures of your 'world travel' all without leaving home!

Term 1 - Reflection

Term 1 has been a fantastic start, it's been an opportunity to build relationships, to get to know teachers and learners in the Ōtaki community.

Seeing student's who are brand new to Chromebooks and using digital tools in their learning and the excitement of them and their teachers.
